Speaking to reporters at a Janaspandana meet at the town police station here on Thursday, Southern Range Inspector General of Police A N S Murthy said that the department is checking all the possibilities of installing cameras on border checkposts.

“Stringent measures will be adopted to prevent the illegal transportation of illicit liquor and other items. People, who cross the border in search of job from other states will be closely observed. Coffee planters should closely monitor the movements of workers from other states in their plantations,” he added.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Manjunath Annigeri said that owners of the 134 authorised and 300 unauthorised home stays in the district have been asked to collect details regarding the visitors.

Traffic snarls

People brought to the notice of the IGP about the increasing number of vehicles and the problem of traffic snarls in the town.

Annigeri said that the town faces acute shortage of space for parking. Public should also co-operate to find solution to the issue,” he added.

Kodagu District Bus Owners’ Association President Ramesh Joyappa said that the development work of national highway between Madikeri and Sampaje will commence on December 20. Initiatives should be taken to inform tourists, who visit the district from outside states, in advance, he added.

Citizens suggested that the work should be commenced in the next month. However, City Municipality Member Unnikrishnan opposed the suggestion. The SP clarified that it will be difficult to postpone the work, since it should be completed by April, 2011.

To a query, the IGP said that the cops have been asked to work without paying heed to any political pressure. No complaints regarding the functioning of police has been received, he added.

Unnikrishnan and Ramesh Joyappa urged the authorities concerned to replace the Mayura services with new vehicles.

They said that new vehicles should be provided to Kodagu district, which has large area of hilly terrains. A proposal should be submitted to the government in this regard, they added.

It was brought to the notice of the IGP that many cops, who have completed nearly 22 years were not promoted. Murty said that the complaint will be verified and action will be taken to solve the issue.
