When contacted, Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti said out of the 44 persons, 25 have been declared as bonded labourers while the remaining are their dependents.

All the rescued persons belong to three districts –– Ramanagar in Karnataka and Krishnagiri and Namakkal in Tamilnadu. The NGO which helped in rescuing the bonded labourers would take up the responsibility of handing over the rescued persons to the respective magistrates, he added.

A case has been registered against Abdul Aziz, the owner of the quarry from where the persons were rescued. It is said that about three years ago, the same quarry was raided, but no case was registered then.

On Wednesday Bangalore-based NGO International Justice Mission (IJM) with the help from Dakshina Kannada district administration and police raided a quarry and rescued 39 ‘bonded labourers’ in Vittal, about 50 kms from here, on Wednesday.
