Police also recovered sophisticated equipment from their hideouts in the neighbouring districts, additional commissioner of police and STF chief Rajeev Kumar said here on Saturday.

Kanchan, general secretary of CPI(Maoists), and two others were arrested near Maidan on Friday night, while the others, including the Maoist women's spokesperson Anu alias Kalpana, were taken into custody on Saturday after STF crack team got clues of their whereabouts by quizzing Kanchan. Anu was detained at Howrah station.

Police produced Kanchan and four others at the Bankshall court and the additional judicial magistrate remanded them to 10 days police custody.

Interrogation of the arrested yielded vital information about the hideouts in Hoogly, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas districts and the STF teams immediately raided these places and recovered improvised launchers, voice circuits, communication devices and some critical documents.

Anil Ghosh, Biman Sur and Bimal Mukherjee are state committee members of the CPI(Maoists) and their arrest is likely to weaken the morale of the ultras.

“We’re still continuing raids at some more places and hope to recover more material,” Kumar told newsmen here.

“We need some more time to scan the seized material after which we’ll be able to throw more light on the Maoists' planned undercover operations in this part of the country.”

Kanchan alias Sudip Chongdar, one of the top Maoist think-tanks in the ultra ranks after Kishenji, had planned and implemented the Lalgarh movement in November 2008.
