This was alleged at a meet-the-press programme here on Monday by Gujarat’s former Director-General of Police R B Sreekumar who was the intelligence chief during the 2002 riots.

Sreekumar who hails from Thiruvananthapuram and is based in Gandhinagar pointed out that he had submitted a report to the SIT headed by former CBI chief R K Raghavan in May 2008 with copies of his four affidavits to the Justice Nanavati Commission.

These affidavits contained evidence relevant to re-investigation of nine major massacre incidents. However, he was not called for any clarification or elucidation relating to these material by SIT.

He pointed out that the Supreme Court had directed the SIT to take steps on the complaint filed by Zakia Nasim Ahsan Hussain Jaffrey, widow of former Congress Member of Parliament Ehsan Jaffrey who was brutally killed by rioters in February 2002.

“Significantly, Jaffrey’s complaint is heavily depended on facts and information narrated in my four affidavits while I was in service, and related documents. Out of the total 87 paragraphs of the complaint, 36 paras are extracts from my affidavits,’’ he said adding,  “None of the authorities did issue any query on my reports, about the ground situation, nor formally questioned the validity and basis of my assessment.’’

However, the CM simply disagreed with his assessment though he did nothing more than that, Sreekumar said.

Sreekumar felt that the information leaked out about the clean chit being given by the SIT to Modi and others was credible. The SIT was following the road map provided by Gujarat police in the investigation of major carnage cases and complaint of Jaffrey. If so, the “devilish immunity’’ of the political leadership  would roll out a red carpet for more riots, he said.
