Admission rules awaiting clearance for two years

Last Updated 06 December 2010, 18:14 IST

The rather bewildering submission was made before the Karnataka High Court on Monday in a petition challenging cancellation of admission to the varsity. Aftab Yellapur was given admission to Bachelor of Veterinary Science course at the varsity for the academic year 2010-11. However, it was eventually cancelled on the ground the father of the student is a KSRTC employee and hence the latter didn’t belong to an agriculturist’s family. Aftab moved the  court claiming that no such rules had been framed till date.

The varsity claimed that it had reserved 23.8 per cent of seats to students hailing from agricultural families.

Justice S Abdul Nazir during the previous hearing noted that the varsity has been awarding degrees without framing any statute since 2004.

After a rap up, the registrar deposed before the court.

Women protection officers

Rapped by the High Court for delay in appointing women protection officers as stipulated under the Domestic Violence Act 2005, the State government on Monday submitted an affidavit stating that it had decided to appoint 47 protection officers.

The Deputy Secretary of Department of Women and Child Welfare stated the government had given permission to appoint 47 women protection officers, first division assistants and  Group ‘D’ employees each to look into the cases filed under the provisions of Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

The State government further submitted that the proposal had been given to appoint 176 protection officers in the state, but the finance department had approved the appointment of only 47 officers.
