Tirupur Exporters' Association resigns from CITI

Last Updated 08 December 2010, 15:08 IST

In a letter announcing the decision, TEA president A Sakthivel said the objectives with which CITI was started have not been met and accordingly, TEA was resigning from the trade body.

He alleged that the confederation has failed to coordinate the efforts of various segments of the industry. In particular, he noted that yarn manufacturers have continuously increased prices, thereby hurting the margins of knitwear and readymade garment-makers.

Tirupur's textiles industry, one of the major foreign exchange earners for the country, exports knitwear and readymade garments worth over Rs 12,000 crore annually.
For the past few months, manufacturers have been railing against rising yarn prices and have demanded a ban on cotton and cotton yarn exports to increase availability in the domestic market.
