Subbanna, a resident of Parvathi Nagar, Basaveshwar Layout, with the help of his son Madhusudan and others, reportedly smothered Vinay (22), a private bank employee, to death at Vrushabhavathi Bridge in Bairamangala village near Bidadi last Saturday.

According to the police, Vinay and 25-year-old Bhumika (name changed) had secretly tied the nuptial knot at a temple sometime ago after years of courtship. They chose to marry in secret as their families had staunchly opposed their alliance. Love had blossomed between the two when they were studying MBA at the CMR Institute of Management Studies, HRBR Layout.

When both the families got to know about the marriage, they induced the couple to part for the time being, promising a reunion later. Soon, Vinay landed a job with Axis Bank at Electronic City. Bhumika’s parents arranged a bridegroom for her and married her off last Friday.

When Vinay got wind of it, he rode on his motorcycle to Subbanna's house on Saturday morning and picked up a quarrel with him. A furious brawl ensued and an enraged Subbanna, his son Madhusudan, and their relatives thrashed Vinay before taking him in a car to Mysore Road.

They stopped the car near Vrushabhavathi Bridge and strangled Vinay to death with a rope, dumped the body and escaped.

Vinay's family grew suspicious when he failed to return. On Sunday, they filed a missing complaint.

During investigation, the Rajagopal Nagar police found Vinay's motorcycle near Subbanna's house. Under interrogation, Subbanna and Madhusudan confessed to the crime. Later, the police recovered the body on Tuesday.
