Srinagar in grip of cold, curfew

Last Updated 15 December 2010, 18:24 IST

People violated curfew restrictions in the Jehangir Chowk and Habbakadal areas, held demonstrations and tried to take out processions. Police and security forces fired in the air, burst smoke shells and resorted to cane charge the protestors. The angry mob threw stones at men in uniform and clashes between the two sides continued for some time.

The day began with authorities clamping down curfew in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Maisuma, Kralhud, Kothibagh, Shaheedgung and Ram Munshi Bagh police stations. Senior separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Aga Syed Hassan were placed under house arrest.

Amid intense cold, the police and security personnel were seen marching early morning from their respective camps and police stations to enforce curfew. Kashmir is experiencing sub-zero temperature during nights and early morning hours these days. The minimium temperature in Srinagar on Tuesday night was minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.
Security personnel and cops laid barbed wire to seal important roads and bridges in the curfew-bound areas.
