Last Updated 21 December 2010, 15:16 IST

The order was passed by a Division Bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Arun Tandon while hearing a Public Interest Litigation which sought to draw the court's attention towards alarming pollution levels in the river.

The court, while directing the Central Pollution Control Board to set up the aforesaid monitoring committee, also asked the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board to examine the quality of water of those tributaries of the Ganges which originate in neighbouring Uttarakhand.

Fixing December 23 as the next date of hearing, the court asked the UP Pollution Control Board to file an affidavit elucidating its findings upon examining the quality of the tributaries' water.
