M'lore docs perform rare surgery

The child was born with a rare heart defect in which one of the lower chambers of the heart was divided into two parts by a muscular and fibrous band obstructing the flow of blood to the lungs.

The obstruction resulted in the enlargement causing severe breathlessness and repeated cough, affecting the growth of the child.

The diagnosis was made by Omega Hospital Chief Cardiologist Dr K Mukund and the cardiac surgery team was lead by Dr A G Jayakrishnan, Dr Anand K T and Cardiac Anesthetist Dr Chetana Anand.

The operation lasted for 3 hours and was done with the help of heart lung machine after stopping the heart. This is first time in the region that such an operation has been performed, states a release.
