As part of the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival (LGMF), conceptualised and directed by Dr L Subramaniam, in memory of his father Prof V Lakshminarayana, a spectacular concert series called Violins for Peace will be held on January 5, 7 pm at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

Acclaimed American classical violinist/ composer Mark O’Connor; Loyko — the gypsy band from Russia comprising Sergey Erdenko, Vladimir Bessonov and Michael Savichev; Kheir Eddine M’Kachiche from Alergia, known for his soulful style; Benedicte Maurseth, who has a deep interest in the instruments of the baroque; Catherine Chen, a well established Western classical violinist in her native country Norway; Dr L Subramaniam and his son Ambi Subramaniam, known for remaining true to their South Indian classical roots even as they collaborate with world musicians, will perform at this year’s festival.

This year’s concert series is unique for many reasons: it brings together some of the greatest violinists from different countries, who play different styles of violin and music, together on one platform. Each ensemble will showcase its own style and, for the grand finale, all the artistes will perform a composition which Subramaniam has specially composed for the event. The core of the festival is the seminar – where master musicians will interact with students of music – and an event called Sounds of India, which is a platform for vibrant and versatile talent.

“For me, there is no better way to pay tribute to my father than to go back to his roots – the violin,” Subramaniam says.

This edition of LGMF will tour six cities namely Chennai, Vizag, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi between December 31 and January 10. There are no tickets/ passes for the event. Entry is purely on ‘first-come-first’ basis. As for the workshop called World of Violins, it will be conducted from 4 pm to 7 pm at Ista Hotel on January 4. It is open to senior musicians and music students, and they can write to sapa.bangalore@gmail.com for registration.

Deccan Herald and Prajavani are media partners for the event.
