Disposing of a public interest litigation by Roopa Naik, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice A S Bopanna directed the State government to submit details of its requirement to the Union government within two weeks.
The Court has also directed the Union government to respond to the State’s request within four weeks.
The petitioner has stated that according to Supreme Court directions, every state has to distribute 35 kg of rice and wheat to each family, in which each member of the family should get 4 kg of rice and 1 kg of wheat. The State is distributing only 23 kg of foodgrains to each family, the petitioner said. The State submitted that the Centre was not supplying foodgrains in adequate quantity.
