As per the guidelines, universities and colleges have to seek permission from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) on purchase of radioactive substance, details of its use, formation and solutions in case of an emergency among others.
Besides, the varsities have to obtain no objection certificate from the AERB, which can also monitor the colleges on the manner in which the material was procured and used.
The UGC directions came in the backdrop of the source of Cobalt-60, which lead to the death of scrap-shop workers in West Delhi Mayapuri, being traced to Delhi University’s chemistry department.
