Cane Research Centre to come up in Mandya

Speaking after hoisting a national tri-colour here, he said plans are afoot to set up the Centre on 100 acre of land available at Sathanur village in Mandya taluk and the government had already released Rs One crore during current fiscal. To begin with, scientists and 10 others would be appointed for the Centre and permission had already been given in this regard, he added. Ashoka said terrorism, naxalism and other activities were hindering the country’s progress. It has become mandatory to gear up to face new challenges everyday, he said.

He called upon the people to be vigilant and help the government to identify and punish those involved in anti-national activities. Only then, it would be possible to protect the country, he added. Meanwhile, the school children took out a march past and also presented a variety of cultural programmes. Students of various schools, NCC cadets, Police and KSRP contingents participated in the march past.

Directive flouted

Despite standing orders from the Department of Education that students should be deputed to the places of function to welcome the guests and VVIPs, it was flouted at Madegowdanakoppal in Mandya taluk.

According to information reaching here, the minister, legislators and officials were supposed to visit the village. Because of this reason, the school children were made to stay till 12 noon.

They left the venue only after the VVIPs arrived in the village.

No flag to hoist

While the whole country celebrated the Republic Day with pomp and gaiety, the department of Tourism of Mandya failed to celebrate as national tricolour was not available for the officials. According to information available, there was no staff member at the office to celebrate. Purushottam, a lone staffer left the office around 12 noon.

According to him, the officer is in Mysore on deputation. The department had written to the seniors requesting for the new flag. As the flag did not come, they could not celebrate the RD. Interestingly, there are only two persons working in this office.
