Last Updated 29 January 2011, 16:34 IST

North, who enjoyed a 63-run lead on the first innings, began the final day at the Moti Baug gound leading by 259 but opted to play it safe.

Amit Mishra’s men could have gone for an outright win by declaring early and trying to get West all out, but they decided to give their batsmen some match practice ahead of the crucial final.

Resuming on 191 for three in their second essay, North went on score 421 all out to set their opponents a target of 485.

When play was called off by mutual consent, West had reached 61 for three in their second innings.

Overnight batsmen Mithun Manhas, resuming on 48, and Yashpal Singh gave North a perfect start on the final day.

While Manhas remained unbeaten on 158, Yashpal chipped in with a valuable 42 as the duo shared a 96-run stand.

Sumit Narwal (50) helped him add 103 to extend North’s lead further. Manhas’s unbeaten 158 came off just 178 balls.

Bhargav Bhatt (4/104) and Samad Fallah (4/113) did the bulk of the damage for West, who then batted out time in their second innings.

Brief scores: North Zone: 460 all out in 130.5 overs and 421 all out in 88.5 overs (Sarul Kanwar 53, Shikhar Dhawan 53, Mithun Manhas 158 n.o., Yashpal Singh 42, Sumit Narwal 50; Samad Fallah 4-113, Bhargav Bhatt 4-104) drew West Zone: 392 all out in 87 overs and 61/3 in 23 overs (Vikas Mishra 2-5).
