Addressing the gathering after inaugurating ‘Akashavani Sahitya Sammelana’ here on Sunday, Dr Shastry said the radio station was started voluntarily by Dr M V Gopalaswamy, at his own residence eight decades ago. “Now, this literary conference has added another feather in the cap, along with another adding up to the long list of ‘firsts’ that have taken place here,” he added.

The seminar, which focused on Akashavani retaining its innate qualities of providing clean entertainment along with disseminating knowledge, dealt with the theme of retaining quality, even while conceiving new programmes to increase audience-base.

“Literature helps your mind and speech, with its excellence, and so does Akashavani. It is not a colourful medium where minds wander all over the place, and frivolousness reigns high. Akashavani will never interrupt the journey of its listeners, whether musical or the one seeking knowledge, thus disbanding their involvement.

“It is a medium of common people. One that is known for discipline, and an open university for all its listeners. It has been discharging its duties as a cultural ambassador,” he said.

In her opening remarks, Akashavani Station Director Dr M S Vijaya Haran said: “Akashavani is working on the basis of ‘Bahujana Hitaya; Bahujana Sukhaya’ -- enhancing people’s knowledge even as entertaining innumerable number of listeners.”
