The customers who venture out to have a quick brunch, are also being targeted by these canines, which retaliate when the people try to drive them away.

According to the statistics available at the City Municipal Council, there are 525 stray dogs and 279 pet dogs. The district administration has failed to control the increasing population of these strays, which has doubled targeting mainly the innocent children on their way to school.

Directorate of Municipal administration had directed the CMC to call tenders to take up sterilisation of the dogs and to vaccinate them against rabies. Tender process was done by the local administration on September 17 and three companies had even submitted the applications.

A tender submitted by Sarvodaya Institution of Bangalore was finalised, but since no meeting was held since the past five months, the tender was rejected.  A meeting held recently has finally approved the tender and the members have also come out with suggestions to relocate the dogs after sterilisation.

Sterilising a male dog costs ` 805  and `  820 for a bitch. Transportation cost of each dog has been fixed at `  80.

Moreover, according to the Supreme Court directive no stray dog should be culled and only sterilisation is permitted for controlling its population. But, the delay in implementing the tender process has irked the citizens who are the sufferers everyday.

A homemaker Kamala said that it has become difficult to keep the doors open as these stray into houses.

The CMC Commissioner B Krishnappa told Deccan Herald that since there are lack of expert dog catchers in the district, they have to be brought from Tamil Nadu.

The tender has been approved in the meeting and discussions were also held over the issue. Steps would be taken at the earliest to curb the stray dog menace, he assured.
