Remarks on girl's dress code land principal in soup

Last Updated 06 February 2011, 17:52 IST

The controversy blew over after GK Gauba, the Director Principal, allegedly asked a student to unzip her pullover and made some lewd comments about her dressing style.

As per the rules of the college, only salwaar kameez is permitted on the campus. Those who wear jeans and T-shirts would invite penalty.

The incident took a new turn after the students sent complaints to the Ministry of Health, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court and to the Vice-Chancellor seeking stringent action against the principal.

Committee to probe

Punjab university Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti has constituted a committee to probe into the allegations that include misbehavior and sexual harassment by the principal.

“The committee, which has representatives of student organisations, will submit its final report on February 7,” a university official said.

Following the protests by the students, GK Gauba went on long leave, following which the institute appointed a new director principal.

The students were also given an assurance to cancel the existing rules with regard to dressing.

Charges denied

Denying the charges made by the students, Gauba said, “I expressed my objection to the way the student was dressed in front of a lady professor and another staffer.

The girl, who was denied permission to appear for the examinations due to shortage of attendance, is making false charges. There is no dress code, but students were asked to follow a decent style.”
