Last Updated 09 February 2011, 17:34 IST

The modalities are being worked out by the Human Resource Development Ministry’s National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT).

Under its technical knowledge dissemination programme, the HRD Ministry has created a repository of 125 courses in web format and 135 courses in video format in technology, engineering and sciences with each course containing around 40 hours of lecture given by India’s best teachers from IITs and IISc.

A server has been set up at IIT Chennai to disseminate these e-content as supplementary study material for the students. The e-learning contents can be accessed by any student from any part of the country free of cost by visiting the website http://www.nptel.iitm.ac.in which was launched by Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday.

These e-learning contents were so far available on google and youtube which has so far received 4.9 billion hits, a large number of them from the USA.
