Prioritise passion, says Mumbai Sheriff

In India, less than 8 per cent of women are on corporate boards, said Mumbai Sheriff Dr Indu Shahani after inaugurating national conference on ‘Women empowerment - Power of the nation’ at SDM College of Business Management on Saturday.

About 50 per cent of India’s population is under the age of 25, she said and added that it is necessary that the youth is empowered today. “If you are passionate about your job, then nothing can come in your way but it is necessary one learns to prioritize and balance ones passion,” she opined.

She also tried instilling motivation in students by giving examples of various youth who have excelled in social entrepreneurship in movements like ‘Mirakle Couriers,’ ‘Chirag’ and ‘1298 ambulance’ service.

“Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders and they should take the nation forward with ethics and innovative ideas,” she advised.

If you want to achieve something, then you have to make the environment positive. Empowerment is a process and not a product and it can be achieved by managing one’s own behaviour, said SDME Society CEO Dr Sudha Rao. “The best managers are one who know to manage themselves hence have discipline and respect yourself,” advised Dr Rao.When you educate a woman, you educate a family.

Empowerment is a key factor which shows success of a women in society, said SDM College of Business Management Principal Dr Devraj K.

The conference had three technical sessions. The session “Women in education and research” was chaired by Besant Women’s College Principal Dr Manjula K T. Roshni Nilaya Medical and Psychiatry HoD Dr Romeela Shekar chaired the session “Women as social workers and leaders” and “Women as administrators and managers” was chaired by KS Hegde Institute of Management Professor Dr Ashalatha.
