10 lakh bogus job cards detected

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Jagadish Shettar said the number of job cards under the scheme had come down to 51.16 lakh in December 2010 from 62 lakh in December 2009. This was possible due to the validation survey being done by the department.

So far, only 69 per cent of the survey has been completed. By March this year, nearly 80 per cent will be complete, the minister said after holding the Vigilance Committee meeting.

An estimated 13.97 lakh families, covering 39.79 lakh people, have benefited from the scheme in the State and about Rs 1,492 crore has been spent this year. The department has already appointed ombudsmen under the scheme in 14 districts of the State. Steps are being taken to cover all other districts.

The department has chalked out a plan to develop 20 km of road in every Assembly constituency under the Mukhya Mantri Grameena Sadak Yojane. The project, which is estimated to cost Rs 1,070 crore, will be completed in 18 months.
