MGNREGS: 'Only 15 pc progress in DK'

Last Updated 18 February 2011, 17:25 IST

Speaking at district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting held at Zilla Panchayat meeting hall on Friday, Deputy Commissioner said “only 15 per cent progress has been achieved in the implementation of MGNREGS in the district. If job cards are issued to the beneficiaries just for the statistics, then no progress can be achieved. Citing an example in Bantwal taluk, he said that job cards have been issued to 22,723 persons. However, only 2,188 were provided with employment in the scheme. The gap between job card holders and the actual beneficiaries is too big,” he added.

He urged all the taluk panchayat EOs to convene fortnightly meeting to review the progress of the work under MGNREGS. There is a need to look into progress achieved in each and every Gram Panchayat.

Both the DC and MLA U T Khader said unless interaction with the beneficiaries are held, the officials will not come to know the problems being faced by them. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that Deputy Commissioner and Zilla Panchayat CEO will convene a separate meeting on MGNREGS within 10 to 15 days.

In Bantwal, the target under MGNREGS was Rs 5 crore. However, works worth Rs 1.91 crore has been completed so far. In Belthangady, Rs 5,58 crore is available under the scheme. The works worth Rs 1.17 crore have been completed so far. In Mangalore taluk, the target was Rs 5.30 crore. However, only Rs 80 lakh has been utilised. The target in Puttur taluk was Rs 4.47crore. However, a sum of Rs 62 lakh has been utilised so far. In Sullia taluk, the target was Rs 3.56 crore. However, only 33 lakh was utilised.

Road

Raising the issue of work on Arkula-Meramajal-Kuttikala road which was undertaken under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), Khader said that there are no alternative road to the villagers.

PMGSY Executive Engineer said that as the case is pending in the court, the work could not be undertaken. The DC and the MP directed the Executive Engineer to consult Chief Engineer and find a solution to the incomplete road work at the earliest.
