ASI to release ` 20 lakh to develop Gaddige

He was speaking after inspecting the doors of Rajara Gaddige, which was set on fire by miscreants, here on Wednesday. “New doors will be fixed to the Rajara Gaddige within 90 days. The new doors will be carved without compromising the historical significance of the monument at an estimated cost of Rs 1.60 - Rs 1.75 lakh,” Gopal said.

A sum of Rs 20 lakh will be handed over to the district administration. A proposal has already been submitted to develop the Gaddige through the Nirmithi Kendra. The development work will be taken up by the district administration directly, he said.

Other agencies will also be considered while handing over the development works, in the wake of the resolutions of Zillla Panchayat and the City Municipality against the Nirmithi Kendra, he added.

Barricade of barbed wires will be erected around the Gaddige and solar lamps will be installed near it. The Gaddige will be beautified by setting up a garden in the premises, Gopal said.

Talking about the encroachment of land belonging to Gaddige, he said, “the case is pending in the court. Efforts will be made to solve the case.”

On security of the Gaddige, he said that two home guards each will be deputed to guard the monument in two shifts. More securitymen will be deputed if required, he promised.
ASI Curator B P Rekha and Preservation Engineer S M Poojari accompanied Gopal during the inspection.
