He was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on self study material organised by Kannada Studies and Research Department, here on Wednesday.

Prof Jagadish mentioned that quality of self study material should be of utmost importance while designing the syllabus. He said that students opting for KSOU should not have the need to visit the library to gain knowledge. Instead, the material provided by the varsity should be sufficient for the student to be competitive, he added.

Mentioning that foreign universities were entering India to provide education, he said that KSOU shouldn’t be limited to only the country. Why shouldn’t we go abroad? he questioned.
Pointing out that increasing competitiveness, he said that the country has 14 open universities, IGNOU and an private open university based in Kohima. He said that IGNOU started with only four programmes and is now offering 325 programmes.

KSOU has identified the need to provide short-term, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate courses in technical fields also. He said that Task Force on Higher Education has recommended that open universities can offer any type of course.

Dismayed

Taking exception to the absence of a few professors at the workshop Prof Jagadish said that in a global age, without being competitive it was impossible to succeed with only one programme. There is a need to offer as many courses as possible, he added.
