Convener of the forum of elected representatives of the arecanut growing areas, D N Jeevaraj, said the chief minister and Opposition leader Siddaramaiah had assured the forum that they would lead the delegation in the interest of arecanut farmers.

The forum submitted a memorandum to both the leaders in this regard on the sidelines of Legislative Assembly session on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court recently banned use of plastic sachets for packing gutkha. The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests subsequently issued a government order.

The delegation will urge the Centre to withdraw the order as it adversely affects arecanut growers, he said. It will also seek minimum support price for arecanut and release of special grants for controlling pests, Jeevaraj said.
