Last Updated 18 March 2011, 12:54 IST

The award honours eminent people who have made an extraordinary contribution to the lives of others and have worked tirelessly for the causes they believed in and this year Rotary has zeroed in on Dr H Sudarshan for his efforts to alleviate the tribals.

Announcing this a press conference in the City, PP Rtn Vijay Kumar said Sudarshan’s continuous support to the tribes is commendable. “He’s a friend of Soligas and other tribes. He’s always in a tee shirt, walks around in chappals and doesn’t bother about what or when he eats and where he sleeps at night. He has dedicated his life towards tribal care,” he said.

Sudarshan is a well-known social worker and tribal rights activist, who has made outstanding contributions in his field.

He primarily works among the 'Soligas' tribes in the Chatnarajanagar district of Karnataka. This recognition marks his contribution to effective mission of sustainable development of tribals through rights-based approaches to health, education, livelihood security and biodiversity conservation. Vijay Kumar said that the award includes no cash prize and that Rotary Club of Bangalore usually teams up the awardee and uses his or her expertise in a project.

“Some recipients of the Awards have been professionals working in the field who have exceeded the requirements of their jobs by creating new opportunities
in education, employment, by providing exceptional care.

Others have been volunteers, who have stepped forward to make their communities better places in which all can share fully as citizens. We have conferred the awards to scientists, artists, sports personalities,” he added.
