Japan quake toll rises to 8,600, 12,877 missing

Military and Tokyo fire department personnel sprayed more water onto an overheating nuclear reactor early Monday at the troubled Fukushima power plant in northeast Japan to prevent a potential meltdown.

Thirteen Japanese military trucks spent about one-and-a-half hours in the morning spraying 90 tonnes of water at the spent fuel pool of reactor No.4 at the nuclear power plant, 240 km northeast of Tokyo, public broadcaster NHK reported citing the defence ministry.
