New bill affects teachers

Speaking to media persons here at a press meet called by Udupi District Job Oriented Courses Staff Association, he said JOC in PU colleges have been discontinued and is replaced by 1,000 ITI colleges across the State. As a result, as many as 3,500 to 3,750 teachers in the State who were engaged in imparting vocational training in as many as 590 educational institutions are displaced.

The government has decided to rehabilitate these teachers who are the victims by offering them jobs in Pre University department based on their educational qualification. However, the person who has 5 years of experience is entitled to the provision. Consequently, as many as 3,246 will be the beneficiaries of the provision, he added.

About 510 teachers who have less than 5 years of experience will be left out of the programme. The guidelines are abided with Supreme Court rules. In Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, as many as 86 teachers will get the benefits and will be given jobs following their educational qualifications. In Udupi district, as many as 40 teachers from 8 PU colleges are rehabilitated. The teachers who worked in JOC were from different background with varied educational qualifications depending on the necessity of the courses. It was an irregular recruitment process lacking proper C&R rules. Job security was never offered to the teachers, he added.
