Damini sinks two records

Ten-year-old sets new marks in 200 IM, 50 backstroke

Damini K Gowda set the pool on fire, clinching a double gold with new national records on the opening day of the State Sub-junior aquatic championship at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) pool here on Friday.

The Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre swimmer broke national records in the Group IV girls’ 200-metre individual medley and 50M backstroke events.

Damini clocked two minutes 51.45 seconds to clinch the 200 IM gold, bettering the previous record of 2:54.00 set by Ruhab Khan of Delhi in 2006. Her BAC team-mates Shraddha S (3:10.28) and Pavithra B (3:18.38) finished second and third respectively.
The 10-year-old St Paul High School student timed 37.91 seconds to pocket the gold in the 50 backstroke. The old mark of 38.15 had stood in the name of Maharashtra’s Kavya B created in 2004.

Damini’s effort was all the more creditable as the corresponding backstroke event winner in the boys’ Group IV category, S Siva (38.81), clocked more than half a second slower than her.
