A meaningful discussion was interrupted by BJP MPs and this was a great loss for the people of the country, he said addressing a campaign rally for Congress candidate Sushmita Dev.

"Each member is paid for attending Parliament and they are answerable to the people of the country," he said adding development can be brought about by sincere work alone and no party can do it merely with slogans.

Mukherjee said opposition AGP had always claimed that there were 50 lakh foreigners in Assam but could not detect a single one though it ruled Assam for two consecutive terms. ''The ground reality is always different from mere allegations and sloganeering and people have to choose the right person as well as the party at the time of casting their vote,'' he added.

Referring to Assam's financial condition, he said when Congress wrested power from AGP in 2001 it was completely running on overdraft with government cheques frequently dishonoured but during the last 10 years the situation had changed drastically with the Centre giving Rs 300 crore as performance grant to the state.
