But today, being overweight or obese is perceived not as a sign of plenty but as a sign indicating, perhaps, a plethora of medical problems. Obesity is a chronic condition that can lead to other problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and cancer. Obesity is also the cause for:

*Breathing issues like heavy snoring, constant fatigue and drowsiness
*Joint pain due to osteoarthritis
* Reflux of acid
* Depression
*Decreased sex drive

Some studies show a link between obesity and asthma too. Obesity further compounds health problems among women at the time of pregnancy and childbirth.

Accumulation of fat around the midriff, more commonly known as the ‘apple’ shape, is more dangerous than fat deposition around the thighs and lower body, a body structure otherwise referred to as the ‘pear’ shape.

Do the math

The ideal weight of an individual corresponds to his/ her height. There are many methods to calculate whether a person is obese, overweight, underweight or normal. The recommended methods are BMI (body mass index) and waist size.

BMI is calculated as per the following formula: BMI = Weight in kilos/ Height in metres squared.

What are the additional problems for obese women? Polycystic ovarian disease, a common ailment in adolescent girls and adult women, is more prevalent in those who are overweight. Increased growth of body hair, irregular periods, tendency to develop diabetes and inability to conceive are the primary symptoms of this disease. Treatment of this condition is aimed at weight reduction primarily, and through medicines — strictly under medical supervision.

When a woman gains weight during pregnancy, she runs the risk of complications during pregnancy, increased chances for a Caesarean section and adverse outcomes during delivery. These complications, in turn, could contribute to a respiratory illness in children including asthma. Maternal obesity in early pregnancy multiplies the risk of obesity in the child too.

Choose wisely

Identifying and acknowledging one’s ideal weight is the first step. Follow that up with healthy eating habits and a change in lifestyle.

Women who are overweight need to consult their doctor and get themselves medically examined to make sure that they do not have diabetes, high BP, high cholesterol or heart disease before embarking on any crash diet or extreme fitness programme.
