According to sources, the Indian High Commission official has been missing since 5.30 p.m. Thursday. He was walking home after work.

This is believed to be in retaliation for the overnight detention of a driver employed with Pakistani High Commission, who was taken for questioning on Wednesday for suspicious behaviour at Chandigarh.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had invited Pakistan premier Yousuf Raza Gilani to watch the India-Pakistan World Cup semifinal played at Mohali, 10 km from Chandigarh, on Wednesday.

The Indian High Commission in Islamabad immediately contacted the Pakistani authorities and asked them to trace the Indian official and ensure his release with "safety and security", sources said.

The ministry of external affairs has also taken up the matter with the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.
