The State government has given permission to impart typing and computer education at all the registered commerce institutes in the State, said S V Sudhakar, President of the Association of Commerce Institutes.

Speaking at a press conference here on Friday he said that a proposal regarding this was given way back in 1996. Though the government had given the permission in 2006 it had not been implemented, he added. Education Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri has now okayed the proposal and hence all the commerce institutes would be able to impart computer education from now on, Sudhkar added.

The computer course comprising two semesters will be of one year duration. The exam will be conducted by Secondary Education Board which would also issue the certificates.
In first semester students will be taught Office Automation which comprises M S Office and Tally. In second semester Desk Top Publishing (DTP) and Internet skills will taught to the students, disclosed Sudhakar who said that course material  is being developed. The government has also fixed the fee amount.

A proposal has been sent to the government to make typing compulsory for the candidates applying for ‘C’ grade jobs in the government, noted Sudhakar who said that typing was compulsory for ‘C’ grade in Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil
Nadu.  He also expressed hope that proposal would be implemented.

Association district President K Ranganath who spoke on the occasion said that commerce institutes were at crossroads and thanked the government for allowing the computer education at the institutes.

1,600 centres

The students, instead of obtaining certificates from unauthorised computer training centres can obtain the same from recognised institutes. A common syllabus will be followed by all the institutes and students can study the same in 1,600 institutes spread across the State.

The commerce institutes are an integral part of the State which function with social concern. Institutes which have an history over 120 years have never received any kind of monetary help from government, he added.

Rajasekhar, a member, urged Social Welfare Department to provide scholarship to the students studying at the institutes.
