HC rejects plea to strip medal of ex-IPS officer

Last Updated 07 April 2011, 06:49 IST

Justice S Muralidhar rejected the petition of Amrik Singh Lovely and Trilok Singh. The petitioners had alleged that the former IPS officer and one of his colleagues, the then SHO of Paharganj police station were wrongly awarded with police medal though they had implicated the victim community during the riots which followed the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

It was alleged in the petition that a mob had gathered outside the Paharganj residence of petitioners on November 5, 1984 and had attacked their relatives, but the police, instead of arresting the culprits, apprehended them for breaching law and order.

They alleged Kanth took no steps to contain the mob, and in fact even rounded up a six-month-old baby, and then jailed everyone in the Daryaganj police station.

Senior advocate H S Phoolka had said that the former police officer was awarded with the medal despite the fact that he did not observe his duty diligently.
