Protest against Bajrang Dal on April 11

Last Updated 09 April 2011, 20:06 IST

Addressing a press meet here on Saturday, Mariamma Thomas asked what powers Bajrang Dal activists have when it comes to raiding ashrams. “Whether the State government has given contract to the Bajrang Dal activists to protect law and order in the district,” she asked.

“If there were any irregularities, then the Bajrang Dal activists should have filed complaint with the department of women and child welfare, police, and the district administration. Even before forgetting the church attack, the Bajrang Dal are involved in attacking orphanages in an organised manner. If the attack continues, then we will intensify our protest in the future. Bajrang Dal does not want people to be educated. The act is nothing but an attempt to spoil the communal harmony in the society. The authorities should take action against those who engage in spoiling harmony in the society,” she said.

She alleged that the kids of Stella Mary’s Ashram who were stopped from going to Bidar for vacation were not given food till they were sent back to the convent at 10 pm.

Mariamma Thomas said the authorities have failed to create an awareness on JJ Act. Before initiating action against  Youth Social Service Charitable Trust run by Lancelot Pinto and a ashram at Pakshikere, the authorities should have issued notice.

Social activist Suresh Shetty said that one should not take law into hands when there is any injustice in the society.
