Cameron tells councils not to be killjoys on Royal wedding day

Last Updated 03 May 2018, 06:43 IST

"Don't be killjoys. Bring out the buntings," Cameron advised local councils warning them not to "strangle street parties with red tape".

"April 29 is going to be a very special day for everyone in Britain," wrote the prime minister in the tabloid 'The Sun', saying he was planning a street party with his wife Samantha.

Asking the councils not to block street fan fare on that day, Cameron said he intends to have a party at 10, Downing Street - although presumably after the official wedding ceremony, to which he is invited.

According to Cameron's estimate around 4,000 parties had already been planned across the country and urged councils not to close roads.

"My message to everyone who wants to have a street party is: I'm having one too and I want you to go ahead and have one too," Cameron advised his countrymen telling them "let's make this a day to remember."

Recalling the famous wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Cameron wrote "I was 14-year-old when Prince Williams parents got married - and I'll never forget the atmosphere that day."

The Sun said Communities Secretary Eric Pickles had issued urgent new guidelines to the councils to ease restrictions on the Royal wedding day.
