Why target politicians? - Digvijay asks activists

Last Updated 16 April 2011, 14:38 IST

"If people representing the civil society can spend Rs.50 lakh, then why are they targeting us politicians?," Singh told reporters here.

"Why are we asked to fight Vidhan Sabha or Lok Sabha elections on a shoe string budget of Rs.16 lakh? The fact of the matter is that the civil society is not answerable to anybody," said Singh.

"Moreover, are we not a part of the civil society? Are politicians uncivil?" Singh asked.
Civil rights activists under the umbrella of India Against Corruption Thursday said they had received donations of Rs.82,87,668 and had spent Rs.50,17,768 on the entire campaign that culminated in social reformer Anna Hazare going on a 97-hour fast for a tougher Lokpal Bill.

Singh had earlier slammed senior advocate and co-chair of the drafting committee of the Lokpal Bill Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan, who is also a member of the committee.

He had questioned the inclusion of the father-son duo in the anti-graft panel, alleging they had evaded stamp duty to the tune of Rs.1.33 crore payable on a property in Allahabad.
Prashant Bhushan has denied the allegation. He has also said that a "smear campaign" has been launched against the activists and he was planning to sue the Congress leader for his allegations.
