There was a time when American and British shows would air in India months or even years after they aired in their respective countries.

But now, times have changed! The lovers of English serials and reality shows are elated with the latest seasons of most American and British shows airing in India. Be it ‘American Idol’, ‘Desperate Housewives’ or the latest shows to captivate the West like  ‘Glee’ and ‘Modern Family’, Indian television seems to provide it all. Besides, a number of English channels like Star World, Zee Cafe, Big Prime CBS and BBC Entertainment ensure that your thirst for the latest in American and British television is satiated. Metrolife speaks to a few fans of English programming and finds out how happy they are to see their favourites programmes being aired almost immediately in India.

Jennifer, a sixth semester student of PESIT, is quite fond of American programmes. “I love crime-based shows like ‘Castle’, ‘Criminal Minds’ and ‘Bones’. I watch the latest seasons of shows on Youtube mostly but now, I am very happy that the programmes are being aired in India,” she says. “Earlier, even movies used to be released much later but now they don’t keep us waiting for long. It’s a good thing as we are an upcoming country and should be treated on a par with the West.”

Aditi S Kumar, a student of biotechnology in Jyoti Nivas College, is another English programme buff who is happy she doesn’t have to waste time downloading these shows.
“I enjoy watching ‘Dexter’, ‘How I Met Your Mother’, ‘Friends’, ‘Community’, ‘Master Chef Australia’ and ‘Modern Family’. So I am really happy when all the latest English shows are telecast on air,” she notes. “BBC Entertainment is a great channel too and I enjoy watching ‘The Weakest Link’ on it,” she adds. “In fact I like ‘Dexter’ so much that I put an alarm on my phone to watch it. It’s great to see these shows on air as they expose one to the world.”

There are many eager people for whom even this telecast is a little too late. Moushumi, a real estate consultant, is one of them. “Though the shows are not aired that late, it’s not real time telecast either. There is always a lapse,” she notes. Since she is eager to watch the latest seasons of most shows, she gets them from the Net. “The latest seasons of shows like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Brothers and Sisters’ take time to air here so I prefer watching them on the computer. However, programmes like ‘American Idol’ and ‘The Jay Leno Show’ are aired real time.”
