This was the second consecutive year when the school teachers, appointed on contract, had to undergo a test, following which their annual increment would be decided.

But unlike last year, when the pass percentage was 98.3, this year only 91.9 per cent teachers could clear the test. A total 1,11,612 teachers appeared in the examination and surprisingly, out of 8,844 teachers who flunked the test, 70.4 per cent were women.
The report is all the more embarrassing for Nitish Kumar, who all along has maintained that there would be no compromise on the quality of education.

“The teachers who have flunked will certainly not get the increment. We will take a decision on their fate soon,” said Principal Secretary, Human Resource Department (HRD), Anjani Kumar Singh.

Singh, however, said all those who have cleared the evaluation test will get one increment and remain in service till they attain the age of 60 years.

Saharsa, Supaul, Madhepura, Kishanganj, Araria and Purnia are districts which have reported maximum failures. These are the same districts with poor literacy rate.

When HRD Minister P K Shahi was specifically asked whether he was satisfied with the quality of teachers, “We have initiated some steps in select districts. Now the ambit of these initiatives will be expanded to other districts to equip the teachers with better skills.”
