Speaking in the Legislative Council, on Thursday, Yeddyurappa said the government was making serious efforts to check the quality of work carried out by BBMP contractors. He added that the government has planned a Rs 1,900 crore programme for BBMP works in 2009-10.

Earlier, senior council member M C Nanaiah quoted the BBMP expenditure for public works for 2008-09, which is in excess of Rs 1,200 crore. Nanaiah said though the government had spent a lot of money, the quality left a lot to be desired.

Any evaluation mode?

He alleged that the roads were cracking up and the quality of drains being built was even worse. Nanaiah went on to question the chief minister if the government had a “quality control report” of any sort to evaluate the work being done .

In response, Yeddyurappa said that ‘Project Monitoring Committees’ headed by BBMP chief engineers in all divisions were constantly checking the quality of work being done. In addition to third party laboratory tests, a task force of the civil engineering firm Torsteel Research Foundation was appointed to evaluate the quality of roads and other structures like underpasses and bridges, he said. The chief minister added that he was inspecting the works at least two days a week, and the quality of work had significantly improved.

Yeddyurappa volunteered to take the Council members on an inspection tour of the works being carried out. If members were still dissatisfied with the work, a quality evaluation panel, which will include a person of their choice and the Torsteel Research Foundation, will be appointed, he added.
