Jan Morcha, now led by Singh’s son Ajeya Singh, is likely to formally merge with the Congress in Lucknow next Saturday — almost eight months after its founder and former prime minister passed away on November 27 last.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh on Thursday told journalists that Ajeya Singh had decided to merge Jan Morcha with the Congress. He said the merger had been approved by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

Jan Morcha had briefly allied with Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party before the last Lok Sabha polls.

However, Ajeya Singh contested the 2009 Lok Sabha election as a Jan Morcha candidate and lost. In the 2004 parliamentary elections, V P Singh had toyed with the idea of approaching the Congress for ticket to his son from Fatehpur.
