'Friend' robs couple after drugging

Similar is the story of Maya Shanbag, a resident of Roopa Nagar on the outskirts. She paid heavily for believing in a stranger, who allegedly decamped with ` 20,000 in cash, 40 grams of gold valuables and two cell phones. 

A native of Mangalore, Maya is into real estate and LIC agency in the city. On April 19, she had been to Bangalore, to visit her sister residing in K R Puram. However, she found herself lost. When she was searching for the address, a person came to her rescue. He introduced himself as Raviraj Shetty, incidentally, hailing from Mangalore.

Trust

As both belonged to same city, it didn’t take much time for Maya to trust him. Her faith grew stronger, when Shetty helped her find the place. It was that at  time, that Shetty disclosed his intention to buy a property in Mysore. Following day, Shetty came to city. Maya accompanied him and inspected a couple of houses before zeroing in on a property in Hebbal for ` 20 lakh.

In her complaint to Jayapura police, Maya has alleged that she and her husband dozed off soon after drinking a softdrink offered by Shetty at their house. “After finalising the deal, Maya and Shetty had returned to their house.

Maya’s friend and ex-serviceman Srinivas was present at the house. Srinivas left after dinner, while Shetty preferred to stay back saying it was too late to travel back.

The police suspect that Shetty may have given Shanbag couple drink spiked with pills that caused intoxication. Strangely, the couple woke up to discover the incident on Thursday night.

A case has been registered and investigations are on.
