Arrest of Kalmadi not enough: BJP

Last Updated 25 April 2011, 19:06 IST

Speaking on the twin developments, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said: “The CBI should expedite the matter. We feel Kalmadi is small fry in the whole matter. We are worried that any further delay will only lead to loss of evidence. All influential people involved in this scam should be brought to book.”

On the 2G chargesheet, she urged the CBI, which is investigating the case, to come forward and say if there was any pressure on it with regard to Ammal. “The 60 per cent shareholder (in the Kalaignar TV) Dayalu Ammal has not been named. We wonder if there was political pressure on CBI… Has there been political bargaining, a political threat that there will be withdrawal of some UPA (United Progressive Alliance) ministers,’ BJP spokesperson said.
The CBI on Monday named five more people, including Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi, as co-accused in the case involving the award of second generation (2G) phone spectrum. The supplementary chargesheet – the second thus far, filed by the probe agency in a special court here, also named as co-accused Sharad Kumar of Kalaignar TV, Karim Morani of Cineyug Films, and Asif Balwa and Rajiv B. Agarwal of Kusegaon Realty.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) welcomed the arrest of Kalmadi but said it was a delayed step. The party also demanded that the CBI lodge cases against all those involved in the expropriation of public funds.

Communist Party of India (CPI) Rajya Sabha MP D Raja also demanded that the CBI arrest all those allegedly involved in the scam. “Not just Kalmadi but all those involved must be arrested. All those allegedly involved in this scam should be prosecuted. The law is taking its course in this country. It was not surprising. It was expected earlier,” said D Raja.
