The minister was speaking to reporters after a meeting chaired by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to take stock of the situation following the rain in the City, on Sunday.

Ashoka said that silt in the lakes prevented the smooth flow of water into them, resulting in flooding during rain.

Steps will also be taken to desilt the stormwater drains, which were filled with 40 per cent silt, to enable smooth flow of rainwater.

Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar said that the government would provide compensation to the next of kin of the engineer who was killed after the wall of the Freedom Park collapsed on him, following rain on Saturday.

Supporting grills would be put up to prevent wall collapse at the spot in future as has been done in Vidhana Soudha, the minister added.
