The PIL by advocate Manoharlal Sharma alleged that at present about 154 members out of 541 MPs are facing criminal cases pending in various courts as reportedly admitted by them in their own affidavits at the time of filing their nominations. The petitioner claimed that the situation in Parliament was getting increasingly vitiated as "hard core criminals" were entering the House after getting elected.
He claimed 10 ministers in the cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and 93 Lok Sabha MPs face criminal charges ranging from murder to rape besides extortion and even attempt to commit suicide.
