Addressing a press meet, he said “the proposed project calls for the construction of two huge canals. To construct these canals, huge size machines must enter thick forest. To supply water to other districts through canals, one has to excavate hillock, soil from Gadikallu in Karkala to Galibeedu in Madikeri. This results in the felling of thousands of trees.”

“As per Wildlife Protection Act, no developmental works can take place in Western Ghat which has been declared as National Park. The Supreme Court had ordered for the closure of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited for the same reason,” he added.

The government should contitute a committee to study the pros and cons of the project. He urged the government to drop the proposal of Nethravathi diversion. “If the government goes ahead with the project, then we will intensify the protest,” he warned.
