The drinking water project which was started in 2006 under Central Urban Water Supply Scheme was completed few months ago. The project was undertaken at the cost of Rs 508.84 lakh. The project was planned in such a way that it would provide water to a population of 12,000, keeping in mind the growth of population in 2031. Accordingly, the project was expected to provide 70 litres of water to 70 per cent of population and 40 litres to 30 per cent of population.

About 170 metre long and four metre height barrage was constructed on Bakri Halla, which is 2 km away from the town.

According to the sources, 287 litres of water would be stored in the barrage which is enough to supply water to N R Pura for six months.

The public suspect that the water would dry in the barrage during summer when the actual need for water arises.

When Deccan Herald contacted ZP CEO Shankarappa, he said the construction work of water storing gate is yet to be completed. The water will be stored only after the work is completed. As the work is yet to get over, the barrage has not been handed over to the Town Panchayat.

However, the project officers say that the the barrage was handed over to Town Panchayat in 2007. Sources said “there is hardly any chance of storing water as the barrage has been constructed in a place which lacks water source.”

The residents opine that the project would have been a success if the barrage was constructed in a place where there is water source.
