Twin girls for Federer

Last Updated 24 July 2009, 17:41 IST

The 15-times Grand Slam winner said Charlene Riva and Myla Rose had been born on Thursday in Switzerland.

“I have some exciting news to share with you,” Federer said on the website (www.rogerfederer.com).

“Late last night, in Switzerland, Mirka and I became proud parents of twin girls,” he said.
“This is the greatest day of our lives. Mirka, Myla and Charlene are all healthy and doing very well.”

The couple got married in April. The 27-year-old Federer met Mirka in 2000 at the Sydney Olympic Games.

Mirka, 31, emigrated with her family to Switzerland from Slovakia when she was two after playing on the WTA Tour.

She retired prematurely due to injury and became one of Federer’s managers in the circuit.
The affable Swiss master has recently overtook American Pete Sampras’ world record of 14 Grand Slams when he won the Wimbledon for a sixth time defeating world number six Andy Roddick in an epic five-set final.

With that victory Federer has also reclaimed his world number position in the ATP rankings overhauling Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who had removed Federer from the top position last year when he defeated the Swiss at the Wimbledon.
