Bitter, cabbage growers destroy crop

Last Updated 27 April 2011, 18:27 IST

Frustrated over the fall in price of cabbage in the market, growers of the vegetable at Kadoli near here on Tuesday ploughed into the ground a large quantity of the vegetable in their fields.

The crop was destroyed to  protest the fall in price of the leafy green vegetable in the local market. It was destroyed in the presence of Rajya Raitha Sangha activists Appasaheb Desai, Bhimasu Patil, Chandru Rajayi, Nagappa Appagol, Basu Patil and Maruti Dademani.

“A bag of cabbage sells for Rs 30 in the market, while it costs us Rs 40 to bring it to the
APMC,” said a farmer.

“It is better that the crop mixes with soil and fertilises it rather than being sold in the market for a meagre amount,’ said another, bitterly.

Over the last few days, many farmers have resorted to destroying the crop without even plucking it from the ground.

A fortnight ago, growers had thrown a large quantity of the leafy green vegetable in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding support price. The District Administration had promised to take action, but no action was forthcoming.
