Confusion over cotton seeds continues

The farmers who lined up in front of the seed centres hoping to avail the cotton seeds were disappointed when the authorised dealers either displayed no stock board or told the farmers that the seeds were in short supply. Hundreds of farmers from Mysore taluk and Nanjangud thronged the seed centres in city, but to no avail. A few            farmers who managed to get a packet of cotton seeds slammed the government for effecting a hike of ` 180 on the seed packets.

Meanwhile, confusion prevailed in H D Kote taluk, the largest cotton growing area in the district when the traders issued about 10,000 tokens on instruction from the agriculture department. They promised to supply the seed on Saturday to the token holders. However, the farmers thronged the seed centres in thousands and were seen waiting for the supply to resume till evening.

Though, a few thousands of packets of arrived, the seeds are in short supply compared to the high demand, an official said.

Joint director of Agriculture Krishnaiah also rushed to H D Kote taluk.  The seed were brought to the taluk centre amid high security. The district administration has deployed more than two platoons of policemen to manage the restless crowd in the taluk.
